US Grants
The
US government spends more and more money funding grant programs every
year. US grant funding increased from over $172 billion dollars (1990)
to over $362 billion (2003). Over this time period, US grants
funding increased an average of 5.9% a year. These grants are awarded to
US citizens and US residents through Federal, State and local government
departments and agencies.
US grants programs typically begin at the Federal level, where the
Federal government allocates various amounts of money to target a myriad
of government programs and initiatives. More often than not, it is not
via the Federal government that individuals access actual grant money.
US grant money is typically allocated from Federal departments down to
the various state departments, which then fund grant programs in their
states, including locally funding grant programs.
These us grant programs are funded using your tax dollars. This money
has helped millions of Americans in a plethora of ways, from safe,
sanitary housing, to small business development, to help for low income
earners trying to pay utility bills, to education funding at all levels
of learning, and in countless other areas.
How many United States grant programs are out there? It is almost impossible to
know. For example, the US Department of Health and Human Services
operates over 300 grant programs, awarding over $240 billion dollars in
grant programs and initiatives. From the Low Income Home Energy
Assistance Program, to the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
Program, to a variety of Health and Family related programs, this
department is responsible for spending more us grant money than any
other.
Why does the United States government spend so much money on grant
programs? The government seeks to help all Americans live safe,
fulfilling lives, leading to their own prosperity and, in turn, the
prosperity of the US economy. Ensuring that all US citizens have access
to safe housing, quality education, funds to develop business, and a
comfortable retirement are all government priorities that target the
well being of the American nation as a whole.
Accessing us grant funding can be very confusing and frustrating for the
average person. Following the grant money trail from the Federal level,
down to your State level or even local level, involves patience and
perseverance. The US Government Grant Resource guide is here to help.
